High school is an exciting time for students, but it can be daunting for both students and parents alike. Frequently parents of high schoolers don't know exactly how to support their student or where to turn to get specific, practical information in our complicated high school system. The High School Parent Engagement Group (PEG) offers parents an opportunity to meet and learn from parents in similar situations, share experiences, get information, problem-solve, and talk about possibilities – all in a welcoming, friendly environment. Parents determine the agenda at our monthly meetings. We listen and learn from each other, and we explore and develop ideas that are important to our group. Many parents simply appreciate the camaraderie and find that the exchange of information is reward enough, while other parents may find like-minded individuals with whom to form an action group and advocate for student-centered change.
Occasionally we invite district decision-makers and staff to our meetings in order to foster broader understanding and facilitate collaboration. Over the years we have hosted school board members, school board candidates, superintendents, directors, counselors, and teachers to collaborate on student-centered initiatives.
